Sculptor David McCracken works primarily in fabricated steel, often elevating humble, everyday objects into memorable, large-scale sculptures. His early work involved carving driftwood and creating props for sets before transitioning to metals. A job in his youth working for a craftsman who made all his own tools was foundational for McCracken, where he learned that discarded materials could be transformed into something both useful and beautiful.
David McCracken draws inspiration from mechanical forms such as engine belts, cogs, and other industrial elements, reimagining them into monumental sculptures. Rooted in his experiences in marginal rural New Zealand and male-dominated working environments, McCracken’s work reflects the respect for craftsmanship he observed in these settings.
